Multi-Omics Approaches to Personalized Sports Nutrition: Limits and Possibilities
This session will emphasize that athletes vary widely in their physiological responses to both exercise and nutrition support. This variance is largely unexplained, despite recent advances in multi-omics approaches (e.g., metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics, genomics, and epigenetics). Dr. Nieman will review recent findings in sports nutrition that used cutting edge technologies and demonstrate how far we are from applying these data to specific nutritional recommendations for athletes.

- Identify that athlete-to-athlete variance in the way they respond to exercise and nutritional interventions is considerable and largely unexplained.
- Describe metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics, genomics, and epigenetics methods and explain recent findings in sports nutrition.
- Justify that the challenges in using multi-omics data to tailor sports nutrition advice to each athlete will require huge investments and scientific advances before this approach becomes accurate and practical.
